Slaves at Mount Vernon - William Lee

The first paragraph of this paper describes the enslaved population at George Washington's Mansion House Farm (part of his Mount Vernon estate), but all the rest is concerned specifically with William Lee (also called Will or Billy Lee), who was Washington's long-time personal attendant. Lee was with Washington throughout the Revolution. After the war, Lee was disabled in some accidents and was put to making shoes. He was freed upon Washington's death and died in about 1828.

William Lee was the enslaved valet of George Washington for nearly two decades. Washington purchased Lee in 1768, when he was at least sixteen years old. Lee was assigned to household work at Mount Vernon Estate and accompanied Washington when he traveled, including during the American Revolution (1775–1783).
